Well…sort of.

Disney has confirmed that parts of Monstropolis will open to guests in 2027, even though work will continue on the land’s biggest attraction: the highly anticipated Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster.

So yes, the monsters are coming.

But apparently they’re not opening the door all the way just yet.

Monstropolis Is Coming in 2027

The announcement is a little more specific than simply saying, “Monstropolis opens in 2027.”

Disney says parts of Monstropolis will open in 2027 while work continues on the Door Coaster.

We’re not getting a complete land-with-everything-included opening date just yet. Disney hasn’t announced exactly when the Door Coaster will begin welcoming guests, either.

For now, we’re getting our first opportunity to step into the world of Monsters, Inc. while construction continues on the attraction that has been the centerpiece of this project from the beginning.

So What Will Be Open?

Disney has revealed quite a bit about what guests will eventually find inside Monstropolis.

There’s the Glob Theater, where Mike and Sulley will headline the new show Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike.

There’s Harryhausen’s, the sushi restaurant inspired by the location seen in the original Monsters, Inc. movie.

There’s Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza for anyone who prefers their Disney dining with significantly more cheese.

There’s also the Elite Scare Club, along with shops and other themed locations that will help turn this section of Hollywood Studios into an actual monster city rather than simply a collection of attractions.

Exactly which elements will be ready when the first portions open hasn’t been fully spelled out by Disney yet.

And we’re not going to pretend otherwise.

The Door Coaster Is Still Under Construction

Here’s the big one.

The Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster is still being built.

The attraction will be Disney’s first suspended coaster, with riders hanging beneath the track as they escape through the Monsters, Inc. factory.

It’s also one of the most unusual coaster concepts Disney has announced for Walt Disney World.

Instead of simply racing through a traditional coaster layout, the attraction is designed around the doors and door-storage system from the movie.

Because apparently when you’re a monster, even getting from point A to point B requires an elaborate industrial door system.

There Is No Door Coaster Opening Date Yet

This is worth emphasizing because we’re probably going to see plenty of headlines suggesting otherwise.

Disney has not announced an opening date for the Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster.

What Disney has announced is that portions of Monstropolis will open in 2027 while construction continues on the coaster.

So if you’re planning a 2027 Walt Disney World trip specifically because you want to ride the Door Coaster, don’t book the trip based on the assumption that it will be operating.

We don’t know yet.

And sometimes “we don’t know yet” is the most honest answer we can give.

Why Open the Land Before the Coaster?

From a practical standpoint, it makes a lot of sense.

Monstropolis is more than one attraction.

Disney is building an entire environment around the Monsters, Inc. universe, complete with dining, entertainment, shopping and immersive details.

If those areas are ready before the coaster, Disney doesn’t necessarily have to leave the entire project behind construction walls until the last piece is finished.

Instead, guests can start experiencing Monstropolis while Imagineers continue working on the biggest attraction.

It’s essentially Disney saying, “Come on in. We’re still working on the back room.”

Welcome to Monstropolis!

One of the most exciting parts of the new land will be the Glob Theater.

Disney has announced Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike, a new stage show featuring the two stars of Monsters, Inc..

The show will also feature an original song written by Disney Legend Randy Newman.

Yes, that Randy Newman.

Having the songwriter behind the original Monsters, Inc. music create a new song specifically for Monstropolis is a pretty fantastic connection between the movie and the new land.

Harryhausen’s Is Coming to Life

Disney is also bringing one of the most recognizable locations from the movie into the park.

Harryhausen’s will be a sushi restaurant inspired by the restaurant featured in Monsters, Inc..

And yes, the infamous sushi chef will be part of the experience.

Because apparently Disney decided that if we’re going to trust monsters with our food, we might as well start with sushi.

Monstropolis Is Becoming a Real Place

That’s probably what makes this announcement so exciting.

Disney isn’t simply building a Monsters, Inc. ride.

It’s building a version of Monstropolis that guests can actually explore.

You’ll be able to walk through the city.

You’ll be able to eat there.

You’ll be able to watch Mike and Sulley perform.

You’ll eventually be able to ride through the factory on the Door Coaster.

And the whole thing is being designed around the idea that this is the first time humans are being welcomed into Monstropolis.

Which is probably fine.

We’re sure nothing could possibly go wrong.

So What Happens in 2027?

Here’s what we know right now:

• Work will continue on the Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster.
• Disney has not announced a specific opening date for the coaster.

Anything beyond that is speculation until Disney gives us more details.

Monstropolis Is Finally Starting to Feel Real

We’ve been watching construction rise at Hollywood Studios for months, but this announcement makes the project feel considerably closer.

We’re no longer just talking about concept art and a future attraction.

Disney is telling us that guests will actually be walking into Monstropolis in 2027.

Even if the Door Coaster isn’t ready yet.

And honestly, I’m okay with that.

I’d rather see Disney open a thoughtfully finished portion of the land than rush everything just so a coaster can have a grand opening on the same day.

Besides, it gives us something else to watch.

First, the monsters arrive.

Then we wait for the doors.

And knowing Disney fans, we’ll be standing outside that construction wall counting down the seconds.

Welcome to Monstropolis, humans. Your 2027 vacation just got a little more monstrous.
