Disney Is Setting Expectations for D23. Should We Believe Them?

D23 is almost here, which means Disney fans everywhere are doing what they do best: speculating wildly about things Disney has not actually announced.

A new attraction? Obviously.

A new land? Probably.

A fifth theme park? Someone on the internet is already measuring the parking lot.

But Disney appears to be trying to bring everyone back down to Earth ahead of this weekend’s big Disney Experiences presentation.

Don’t Expect a Parade of Giant Announcements

The messaging surrounding this year’s Horizons: A Carousel of Progress showcase suggests that Disney is putting the emphasis on projects and experiences that have already been announced.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be anything new.

Disney has promised announcements, surprises and behind-the-scenes looks during the presentation.

But the overall setup is noticeably different from the D23 events where fans arrive expecting Disney to drop an enormous stack of completely unexpected projects on the table.

And honestly?

Maybe that’s not a bad thing.

We Already Have Plenty to Talk About

Disney doesn’t exactly have a shortage of projects currently under construction or in development.

Magic Kingdom has a massive amount of change underway, including the future Villains Land and the recently announced Piston Peak project.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is transforming DinoLand U.S.A. into Tropical Americas.

Hollywood Studios is building Monstropolis.

EPCOT continues to evolve.

And Disney is still working through a long list of previously announced resort and entertainment projects.

So even if Disney doesn’t unveil twelve completely new attractions Saturday night, there’s plenty of material to explore.

But Then There’s Piston Peak

Here’s where things get interesting.

Disney is bringing a model of Piston Peak National Park to D23.

That project is part of the transformation planned for Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland area and is based on the world of Cars.

And when Disney goes to the trouble of transporting a detailed physical model of a future project to its biggest fan event, people are naturally going to want to know what they’re looking at.

Could we get additional details?

Absolutely.

Does that mean Disney is about to announce an entirely different version of the project?

Probably not.

But that’s not going to stop anybody from guessing.

And Then There’s Villains Land

Villains Land is another project that’s going to be hanging over the weekend.

Disney announced the land for Magic Kingdom in 2024, but fans still have plenty of questions about exactly what the finished project will contain.

And this is where the D23 expectation game gets tricky.

Even if Disney doesn’t announce a dozen brand-new projects, providing meaningful updates about existing ones could still make for a pretty substantial presentation.

Personally, I’d rather get actual information about something Disney is really building than another shiny concept that won’t see the light of day for six years.

So, Should We Believe Disney?

For the most part, yes.

We probably shouldn’t walk into Saturday’s presentation expecting Disney to unveil a new theme park, three new Magic Kingdom lands and a working teleportation device.

Although if the teleportation device is announced, I will happily admit I was wrong.

The safer expectation is that Disney will spend a significant amount of time talking about projects we’ve already heard about while providing new details, footage, models, timelines and perhaps a few surprises along the way.

And frankly, that could be more useful to Disney fans than another enormous list of projects that may or may not happen.

Of Course, We’re Still Going to Speculate

Let’s be realistic.

Disney can tell us to expect a calm, measured presentation featuring previously announced projects.

Disney fans are still going to arrive with spreadsheets.

Someone will zoom in on a background image.

Someone else will decide the shape of a stage light is a reference to a new attraction.

And somewhere, somehow, a construction wall will become evidence of a fifth theme park.

It’s tradition.

What We’re Watching This Weekend

For WDW Rambler, the biggest things to watch will be the projects that directly affect Walt Disney World.

That means Piston Peak, Villains Land, Tropical Americas, Monstropolis and the other major projects already underway or announced.

We’ll also be watching for opening windows, attraction details, new concept art and anything Disney wasn’t quite ready to tell us before now.

And yes, we’ll be watching for the surprises too.

Lower Expectations. Keep the Popcorn.

Maybe Disney really is telling us exactly what to expect from D23 this year.

Maybe Saturday will be a relatively straightforward look at projects we already know are coming.

Or maybe Disney has a few things tucked away that it hasn’t mentioned yet.

Either way, we’re not going to complain.

Because D23 weekend is here, the Disney Parks are changing faster than ever, and there are already more than enough projects to keep us busy.

So go ahead and lower those expectations.
