Disney Is Digging Up a Lost S.E.A. Artifact at D23—and Now We’re Paying Attention

And now Disney is digging up something new.

Walt Disney Imagineering is teasing a newly rediscovered S.E.A. artifact that will be unveiled at D23 this weekend.

Because apparently regular D23 announcements weren’t mysterious enough.

What Is S.E.A.?

The Society of Explorers and Adventurers, better known as S.E.A., is a fictional organization woven throughout Disney Parks storytelling.

Its members, adventures and artifacts have popped up in attractions and experiences around the world, creating connections between stories that might otherwise seem completely unrelated.

For Disney fans who love the tiny details, S.E.A. is basically catnip.

You start noticing the references, then you start looking for more references, and before you know it, you’re standing in an attraction queue studying a framed photograph while everyone behind you wonders what exactly you’re doing.

Not that we’ve ever done that.

Disney Says It Has Rediscovered an Artifact

Walt Disney Imagineering says it will unveil a newly rediscovered S.E.A. artifact during D23.

And that’s pretty much where the details stop.

Disney hasn’t revealed exactly what the artifact is, where it came from or how it fits into the larger S.E.A. story.

Naturally, that means Disney fans have approximately five minutes to come up with 47 theories.

Is it connected to an existing attraction?

Is it part of a new story?

Could it provide another connection between Disney Parks around the world?

Or is Disney simply giving the Disney-history nerds something shiny to obsess over for a weekend?

Honestly, we’re good with any of those options.

Why S.E.A. Is Such a Big Deal for Disney Fans

S.E.A. might sound like an elaborate excuse for Imagineers to put mysterious objects in display cases, but there’s more to it than that.

The organization gives Imagineering a way to create a larger fictional history that stretches across attractions and Disney Parks.

Instead of every attraction existing completely on its own, pieces of the S.E.A. story can appear in different locations.

Once you know what you’re looking for, those connections become much easier to spot.

And that kind of storytelling is one of the things that makes Disney Parks fun even when you’re not standing in line for an attraction.

There’s always another little detail hiding somewhere.

Why Reveal It at D23?

The timing makes perfect sense.

D23 is where Disney brings together some of its biggest fans, and the event gives Imagineering a chance to talk directly to the people who will actually appreciate the significance of something like a fictional organization’s mysterious artifact.

Disney’s major Disney Experiences presentation, Horizons: A Carousel of Progress, takes place Saturday, August 15.

But the S.E.A. reveal gives fans something to watch for before the big presentation even gets underway.

And let’s be honest. Disney fans don’t need much encouragement to start speculating.

Give us a mysterious artifact, a few vague clues and a weekend of waiting, and we’ll build an entire attraction around it before Disney finishes the sentence.

So What Exactly Did Disney Find?

That’s the fun part.

We don’t know yet.

Disney has given us enough information to know that something is coming, but not enough to spoil the reveal.
