The Diamond Horseshoe is located in Frontierland and has long been one of those Disney World restaurants that can be easy to overlook when you’re busy trying to conquer Magic Kingdom.

The new pop-up gives the restaurant another reason to put it back on your radar.

Rather than simply reopening with its traditional dining format, Disney is using the limited-time experience to offer a special menu of food and beverages.

Because apparently Magic Kingdom needed another place to convince us that we should stop for lunch.

Disney has released the food and beverage lineup for the pop-up, giving guests a preview of what will be available beginning October 4.

The menu includes a combination of savory dishes, sweets and specialty beverages designed specifically for the limited-time offering.

That makes this less of a permanent restaurant overhaul and more of a temporary reason to stop by and see what’s happening.

Limited-time menus at Walt Disney World have become a pretty big part of the Disney dining experience.

Between festivals, seasonal events and special celebrations, Disney has gotten very good at convincing people that they absolutely need to eat something simply because it won’t be around forever.

After nearly six months behind construction walls, Big Top Souvenirs at Magic Kingdom is finally reopening.

The Storybook Circus shop closed back in February for refurbishment, and now Disney has officially welcomed it back on August 21, 2026.

And apparently the circus wasn’t going to come back empty-handed.

Big Top Souvenirs is reopening with a refreshed look, its familiar selection of Disney merchandise, and a whole new lineup of treats at Big Top Treats.

Big Top Souvenirs Is Finally Back

If you’ve walked through Storybook Circus over the past several months, you’ve probably noticed the construction walls surrounding Big Top Souvenirs.

The refurbishment began in February, with work including a replacement of the tent structure and updates to the exterior.

The scaffolding eventually came down, the new signage appeared, and it became increasingly obvious that the reopening was getting close.

Now the wait is over.

Big Top Souvenirs is officially open again.

And Yes, There Are New Snacks

This is the part that got my attention.

Big Top Treats, the confectionery counter inside Big Top Souvenirs, is reopening with a lineup of new circus-themed goodies.

And Disney apparently decided that subtlety wasn’t really necessary.

Mickey and Dumbo Caramel Apples

Two of the new treats are the Mickey Churro Caramel Apple and the Dumbo Caramel Apple.

The Mickey version combines a Granny Smith apple with marshmallow ears, Werther’s Original caramel, a white chocolatey coating and churro cinnamon sugar.

The Dumbo version gets sugar-cookie ears, caramel and chocolatey coating, along with details inspired by Dumbo’s classic circus costume.

Because apparently a regular caramel apple wasn’t quite chaotic enough.

There Are Cupcakes, Too

If caramel apples aren’t your thing, Disney has several other options.

The new Minnie Pink Lemonade Cupcake features a pink lemonade-flavored cupcake with buttercream, white chocolatey ears, sprinkles and a chocolatey bow.

There’s also a Mickey Vanilla Celebration Cupcake with buttercream, chocolatey ears, colorful chocolatey stars and a sprinkle surprise inside.

And yes, I’m going to need to know exactly how much sprinkle is considered a “surprise.”

Dumbo Gets a Cookie

Another new offering is the Dumbo Sandwich Cookie.

It features two Dumbo-shaped sugar cookies filled with vanilla buttercream and colorful sprinkles.

There’s also a Mickey Circus Cookie with a Mickey-shaped sugar cookie, pink or white chocolatey coating and colorful sprinkles.

And Then We Have Circus Chips

I’m not entirely sure who looked at corn chips and thought, “You know what these need? Brown sugar and cinnamon.”

But here we are.

Circus Chips are corn chips coated with brown sugar and cinnamon.

Honestly?

I’m intrigued.

Sometimes the weird little Disney snacks are the ones that end up being surprisingly good.

There’s Even a Dipping Snack

For something a little less dessert-heavy, Disney is also offering Big Top Dippers.

The snack combines animal crackers and apple slices with vanilla buttercream, Werther’s Original caramel and colorful sprinkles for dipping.

It’s basically a Disney-fied snack board.

And I can’t decide whether that’s genius or something that could get very messy very quickly.

It’s More Than Just a Snack Stop

Big Top Souvenirs has always been more than a place to buy a T-shirt.

The location sits right in the middle of Storybook Circus, near Dumbo the Flying Elephant and The Barnstormer, making it an easy stop while exploring this part of Fantasyland.

And Big Top Treats has traditionally been one of those places where you can grab something sweet without committing to an entire meal.

Which, let’s be honest, is exactly what we need at Disney World.

The Storybook Circus Refurbishment Is Nearly Wrapped Up

Big Top Souvenirs was the last major piece of the recent Storybook Circus refurbishment to reopen.

Pete’s Silly Sideshow returned earlier this summer, bringing Minnie, Daisy, Donald and Goofy back inside after their temporary outdoor meet-and-greet setup.

Now Big Top Souvenirs is back, too.

I’m always happy when Disney brings back a familiar location after a refurbishment, especially when it comes with something new.

And Big Top Souvenirs has managed to do exactly that.

And now you’ve got enough new snacks to make a stop here significantly more dangerous for your wallet.

Which is probably the most Disney ending possible.

Disney has finally given us a look inside the new version of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress—and we’re going back to the 1980s.

Specifically, Halloween night in 1985.

Which means big hair, questionable technology, Halloween candy and a family that is apparently about to discover that the future is going to involve a whole lot of gadgets.

Honestly, as someone who remembers the 1980s, I’m already feeling personally attacked.

Welcome to 1985

The new 1980s scene will take place on Halloween night in 1985.

And for the first time, Sarah takes center stage.

Disney says she’ll be showing off how new appliances and gadgets are making life easier for the family.

That’s a pretty perfect setup for the Carousel of Progress.

After all, the entire attraction has always been about watching technology change everyday life.

And if there’s one thing the 1980s gave us, it was a whole lot of technology that seemed incredibly futuristic at the time.

Sarah Gets Her Moment

One of the more interesting changes to the new scene is the increased focus on Sarah.

Instead of simply having the family patriarch narrate the latest technological breakthrough, Sarah will be showing how those innovations are affecting the household.

And that gives the scene a different perspective on the family’s relationship with technology.

It’s also a nice reminder that the Carousel of Progress isn’t supposed to be about one person predicting the future.

It’s about how families experience progress.

Meanwhile, Dad Is Handing Out Candy

While Sarah is busy inside, John will be outside on the porch handing out candy to Halloween trick-or-treaters.

Because apparently even the future can’t save Dad from Halloween duty.

And honestly?

That’s probably one of the most relatable things the Carousel of Progress has ever done.

And Uncle Orville Is Still Uncle Orville

Don’t worry.

Uncle Orville hasn’t been forgotten.

Disney says he’ll still be making an appearance—and, naturally, he’ll be in the bathroom.

Because some traditions simply cannot be improved upon.

There’s also a joke about him having “no privacy around here!”

So yes, after all these years, Uncle Orville remains the poor guy who just wants five minutes alone.

Some things really are timeless.

The 1980s Are Going to Look Very Different

The new scene is more than simply changing the calendar on the wall.

The 1980s were a fascinating period for technology.

Home computers were becoming increasingly common.

Electronic gadgets were becoming smaller and more accessible.

Entertainment technology was changing rapidly.

And suddenly, things that would have sounded like science fiction a few decades earlier were sitting in people’s homes.

That’s exactly the kind of technological shift the Carousel of Progress was designed to showcase.

And Then There’s the Nostalgia Factor

Here’s where this scene could be particularly fun for Disney fans who actually remember the 1980s.

The new scene isn’t just depicting some generic version of the decade.

It’s specifically set in 1985.

That gives Imagineering a very specific moment in time to play with.

And if the concept art is any indication, we’re going to see plenty of little details that help establish exactly when we are.

That’s one of the things that has always made Carousel of Progress so much fun.

New Voices Are Joining the Family

The updated Carousel of Progress will also feature two very recognizable voices.

Disney Legend Jamie Lee Curtis will voice Mom, while Bryan Cranston will voice Dad.

That was definitely not on our D23 bingo card.

But we’re not complaining.

The Carousel Is Getting Four New Decades

The 1980s scene is only one part of the larger update.

Disney says the refreshed attraction will follow the family through four new decades of progress, bringing the story forward while keeping the attraction’s basic premise intact.

That means we’ll be watching this family experience the technological changes of the 1980s, 1990s, the new millennium and beyond.

It’s a pretty ambitious update for an attraction that has been telling essentially the same story for generations.

Carousel of Progress Returns in 2027

Disney has announced that Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is expected to reopen in late spring 2027.

That gives Imagineering plenty of time to finish the new scenes, update the attraction’s technology and get the new cast recordings into place.

And when it returns, guests will get something that is both familiar and new.

The same rotating theater.

The same family.

The same optimistic message.

But a whole lot more progress.

I’m Ready for the 1980s

I’ll admit it.

Of all the new scenes Disney could have shown us, the 1980s one has me particularly curious.

Maybe it’s because I remember the decade.

Maybe it’s because the idea of watching Imagineering recreate 1985 through the lens of a family experiencing new technology sounds like exactly what Carousel of Progress should be doing.

Or maybe I just want to see how many 1980s gadgets Disney can cram into one scene.

Either way, I’m ready.

We finally have names.

We have ride vehicles.

We have mountains, geysers, dirt trails and demolition derbies.

And now we have a much better idea of what Disney is actually building inside Piston Peak National Park at Magic Kingdom.

During D23, Disney revealed the official names and new details for the two attractions coming to the new Cars-themed area.

And they are very, very different rides.

Meet Cars: Ridge Run Rally

The headliner of Piston Peak will be Cars: Ridge Run Rally, an off-road racing adventure that will send guests tearing through the wilderness surrounding Piston Peak.

And this isn’t going to be a nice, orderly little lap around a track.

Disney describes Ridge Run Rally as an off-road race through the mountainous landscape, with guests racing across rugged terrain and trying to put together the fastest lap.

Because apparently Lightning McQueen’s idea of a relaxing afternoon involves launching a vehicle through a geyser field.

It’s a Race Through the Mountains

The attraction will wind through a Rocky Mountain-inspired environment filled with dramatic terrain.

And Disney has given us a pretty good idea of what riders will encounter along the way.

The course includes snowy mountain peaks, bumpy camelback hills and a geyser field.

Yes.

Geysers.

Because apparently a regular road trip wasn’t dangerous enough.

The Cars Aren’t Staying on a Track

One of the things that makes Ridge Run Rally especially interesting is the off-road design.

Instead of following a traditional coaster track, the vehicles will travel through the natural landscape of Piston Peak along winding trails.

The huge model Disney has displayed at D23 gives us a much better look at how the course will move through the land.

Guests will race through wooded areas, across bridges and around the mountainous terrain, with waterfalls, streams and rockwork surrounding the course.

It looks less like a theme park ride and more like somebody handed Lightning McQueen the keys to a national park and told him to make questionable decisions.

And Yes, There Are Characters

Ridge Run Rally isn’t just about racing through pretty scenery.

The Cars characters will be part of the experience, helping connect the ride to the world of Pixar’s Cars.

Lightning McQueen is prominently featured in the Piston Peak model, and the attraction is designed to feel like an adventure taking place within the Cars universe.

Disney is also using the surrounding environment to tell the story of Piston Peak itself.

Then There’s Miss Fritter

If Ridge Run Rally is the big thrill attraction, the second ride is going in a considerably more chaotic direction.

Meet Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin Along.

And yes, that name is a mouthful.

But it sounds exactly like something Miss Fritter would approve of.

Miss Fritter Is Hosting a Demolition Derby

Inspired by Miss Fritter from Cars 3, the attraction will put guests in the middle of what Disney describes as her wildest demolition derby yet.

And Miss Fritter herself won’t just be represented by a sign or a piece of scenery.

Disney says the attraction will feature a huge, school-bus-sized Miss Fritter Audio-Animatronic as the host of the experience.

Because obviously Miss Fritter needs to be enormous.

She is the Diva of Demolition, after all.

What Will the Ride Do?

Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin Along will be a family-friendly spinning attraction.

Guests will climb aboard vehicles and join Miss Fritter for a demolition derby-style experience.

The vehicles will spin and move around the ride area while Miss Fritter oversees the chaos.

It’s designed to be accessible to a wider range of guests than the more intense Ridge Run Rally.

Which is probably for the best.

Not every member of the family needs to be launched over a mountain before lunch.

Two Rides. Two Very Different Experiences.

This is one of the things I like about Disney’s plan for Piston Peak.

The two attractions aren’t simply variations of the same experience.

Cars: Ridge Run Rally is the big adventure.

It’s fast, it’s rugged and it’s designed to send guests racing through the wilderness of Piston Peak.

Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin Along is the family-friendly chaos machine.

It’s smaller in scale, but the giant Miss Fritter Audio-Animatronic should give it plenty of personality.

And This Is Where Piston Peak Gets Interesting

Disney already has a Cars-themed land at Disney California Adventure.

But Piston Peak isn’t simply copying Radiator Springs.

Instead, Disney is building an entirely different environment around the Cars characters.

There are no desert roads stretching toward Radiator Springs here.

We’re getting mountains, forests, waterfalls, streams and geysers.

It’s a national park populated by cars.

Which is weird.

But in a very Disney sort of way, weird can be good.

The Details Are Finally Starting to Come Together

For months, we’ve been looking at construction photos and concept art trying to figure out exactly what Disney was planning for this enormous piece of Magic Kingdom.

Now we’re finally getting answers.

We know the land is called Piston Peak National Park.

We know the headliner is Cars: Ridge Run Rally.

We know families will be able to climb aboard Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin Along.

And we know that Piston Peak is going to look very different from the Cars land Disney already has in California.

Is Piston Peak Starting to Make Sense?

There’s still plenty of controversy surrounding the project, particularly because Piston Peak is replacing the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island.

That conversation isn’t going away.

But now that we’re seeing the actual attractions and the environment Disney is creating, it’s becoming easier to understand what Imagineering has been working toward.

Whether you love the project, hate the project or are still sitting firmly on the fence, there’s one thing we can probably agree on:

Ridge Run Rally sounds like one heck of a road trip.

Just don’t ask Miss Fritter for directions.

She’ll probably send you through the geysers.

Villains Land will be located beyond Frontierland and will bring some of Disney’s most infamous villains together in one new environment.

Disney describes the land as a place where villains have gathered after being pushed out of their own stories.

Which seems like a perfectly reasonable excuse for them to build an entire neighborhood.

Because if there’s one thing Disney villains know how to do, it’s make an entrance.

Two New Attractions Are Coming

Disney has confirmed that Villains Land will feature two major attractions.

The first will be a thrilling attraction inspired by Maleficent.

Guests will race through the briars of her enchanted world in what Disney describes as a high-energy coaster experience.

The second attraction will take guests into the world of Disney’s villains through a mysterious experience involving the Magic Mirror.

And yes, we’re already curious about that one.

Maleficent Is Getting Her Own Ride

The Maleficent attraction sounds like the more overtly thrilling of the two experiences.

Guests will travel through the enchanted landscape surrounding the Mistress of All Evil, with the attraction built around the iconic briars from Sleeping Beauty.

Disney has not revealed every detail about the ride system or storyline yet, but the concept gives us a pretty good idea of the tone.

This isn’t going to be a cheerful little spin through Fantasyland.

Bring your courage.

Then There’s the Magic Mirror

The second attraction may be even more intriguing.

Disney says guests will encounter the Magic Mirror and enter a world where villains are very much in control.

That’s about as much information as we have right now.

Which means, naturally, the internet has already decided it knows exactly what the attraction is going to be.

We do not.

And we’re going to resist the temptation to pretend otherwise.

Why Villains Land Is Such a Big Deal

Disney villains have always been some of the most popular characters in the company’s history.

Maleficent.

Ursula.

Hades.

The Evil Queen.

Cruella.

Jafar.

They’ve been appearing in attractions, shows, merchandise and Halloween events for years.

But giving them an entire permanent land is something else entirely.

And Magic Kingdom has never had anything quite like it.

This Is a Very Different Magic Kingdom

Villains Land represents a pretty significant change in the way Magic Kingdom is expanding.

It’s not another princess-heavy area.

It’s not another nostalgic recreation of a classic Disney movie.

Villains Land is still a few years away, and Disney has plenty more details to reveal.

But after years of hearing about the project in broad strokes, we’re finally getting a clearer picture of what Disney is actually building.

Two major attractions.

A Maleficent coaster.

The Magic Mirror.

And an entire land devoted to the characters who have spent decades trying to ruin everybody else’s happy ending.

The Attraction Is Getting a Fresh Look

The Carousel of Progress has always been a time capsule.

Its rotating theater takes guests through different periods of American life, showing how technology has changed the way people live.

That’s the entire point of the attraction.

But eventually, an attraction about the future can start looking like it came from the future of 1974.

And that’s where the new update comes in.

Disney has been working on a refreshed version of the attraction that will update elements while retaining the basic structure and spirit of the original experience.

Yes, Walt Disney Is Still Part of the Story

One of the most important things about the Carousel of Progress is its connection to Walt Disney himself.

Walt personally presented the original attraction at the 1964 World’s Fair, and the attraction has remained one of the clearest surviving examples of his fascination with technological progress.

That history makes any update a little more complicated.

Disney isn’t just refreshing an ordinary theme park attraction.

And if you’re a Disney Parks history nerd, this is the good stuff.

Concept art is great.

But seeing the actual three-dimensional characters that Imagineering is working from gives you a much better sense of what the finished attraction could look like.

It makes the project feel real.

But Is This Still the Carousel of Progress?

That’s the question a lot of longtime Disney fans are going to have.

And honestly, it’s a fair one.

Updating a classic attraction is always a balancing act.

Change too little and the attraction can feel dated.

Change too much and suddenly you’ve taken something people loved and turned it into something else entirely.

The good news is that the materials Disney is showing at D23 suggest the core identity of the Carousel of Progress is still very much part of the plan.

It’s still about the same family.

It’s still about technological progress.

And, presumably, we’re still going to be singing that song when we leave.

A Classic Is Getting a Little Polish

The Carousel of Progress update isn’t necessarily the flashy announcement that gets the biggest headlines at D23.

There isn’t a new roller coaster.

Sometimes the most interesting Disney updates are the ones that take something familiar and give it enough attention to keep it around for another generation.

The new costumes, character maquettes, and attraction poster on display at D23 give us our clearest look yet at the direction Disney is taking with the Carousel of Progress refresh.

We still have more to learn, but the project is beginning to feel less like a vague promise and more like something we can actually see coming together.

And for a 60-plus-year-old attraction about the future, that’s probably pretty appropriate.

A detailed model of Piston Peak National Park, the massive new Cars-themed area planned for Magic Kingdom, appears to be heading to D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event this week.

And Disney didn’t exactly sneak it into the back of a U-Haul.

Walt Disney Imagineering recently shared a video showing the detailed Piston Peak model being packed up for transport to D23, which runs August 14–16 in Anaheim.

For Disney fans, that’s interesting.

For people watching what’s happening at Magic Kingdom, it’s potentially very interesting.

What Is Piston Peak?

Piston Peak National Park is the planned Cars-themed area coming to Magic Kingdom.

The project is part of the significant expansion and transformation happening around Frontierland and the western side of the park.

Disney has previously announced that the new area will feature two attractions, bringing the world of Cars into Magic Kingdom in a way we haven’t seen at Walt Disney World before.

And while we still have plenty of time before guests can actually visit Piston Peak, the project has moved well beyond the “wouldn’t this be cool?” stage.

We’re talking about actual Imagineering work, planning and construction.

Now we’re getting a look at the model.

Why Does the Model Matter?

Disney fans have learned over the years that Imagineering models aren’t exactly random pieces of Disney décor.

They’re used to help visualize the environment, architecture, layout and overall experience of major projects.

So when a massive model is being transported to the company’s biggest fan event, people naturally start paying attention.

And this one is particularly interesting because D23 is happening this weekend.

That timing is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

Does This Mean Piston Peak Will Be Announced at D23?

Maybe.

And here’s where we’re going to put the brakes on the runaway Disney rumor train.

The model being transported to D23 does not, by itself, confirm that Disney will announce a new opening date, reveal new attraction details or drop some giant Piston Peak bombshell on the convention floor.

It does, however, strongly suggest that Disney wants fans to see the project.

That’s worth paying attention to.

There are already plenty of predictions floating around about what Disney might announce at D23. Some are based on known projects. Others are based on the ancient Disney fan tradition of staring at a construction wall for six minutes and declaring that it definitely means something.

We’re sticking with the facts.

For now.

Disney Has Plenty to Talk About

Piston Peak isn’t the only major project generating interest around Walt Disney World.

Disney has several major developments underway or planned across the resort, and Magic Kingdom in particular is entering a pretty fascinating period of change.

That’s one reason this model is so fun to see.

Magic Kingdom is one of Disney World’s oldest parks, and it’s increasingly clear that Disney isn’t treating it like a museum piece.

We’re getting new attractions, new lands and major changes while the park’s classic identity remains intact.

That’s a tricky balancing act.

And, depending on your personal feelings about replacing or reimagining parts of the park, it’s also one of the more interesting things happening at Walt Disney World right now.

Piston Peak Could Be a Big Deal for Magic Kingdom

Cars is already an enormous Disney Parks franchise.

Cars Land at Disney California Adventure demonstrated just how immersive that world can become when Disney Imagineering gets to build it at scale.

Piston Peak gives Walt Disney World its own take on the franchise rather than simply copying what exists on the West Coast.

That’s exciting.

And putting the area inside Magic Kingdom makes it even more interesting.

Magic Kingdom has traditionally leaned heavily into fantasy, adventure, Americana and classic Disney storytelling.

Now we’re apparently adding talking race cars to the neighborhood.

Because why not?

Honestly, if Disney can make it work, I’m here for it.

What Could We Learn at D23?

That’s the big question.

Disney could potentially provide more details about the land, attractions, theming or development timeline.

Or we could get absolutely nothing beyond a really cool model sitting there looking pretty while thousands of Disney fans attempt to photograph every square inch of it.

Both possibilities remain firmly on the table.

Until Disney officially announces something, it’s important to treat predictions as predictions.

Now We Wait to See What Disney Has Up Its Sleeve

The Piston Peak National Park model heading to D23 isn’t confirmation that Disney is about to reveal every remaining detail about the new Magic Kingdom area.

But it is a pretty significant signal that Piston Peak is going to have a presence at the biggest Disney fan event of the year.

And with D23 beginning August 14, Disney fans won’t have to wait long to find out whether the model is simply there to show off some Imagineering handiwork—or whether Disney has something else up its sleeve.

For now, I’m keeping the speculation engine running at idle.

Because if Disney taught us anything, it’s that when Imagineering starts packing up giant models, somebody somewhere is about to start talking.

And I’ll be watching.

The “World’s Most Magical Celebration” kicks off on October 1, 2021, and lasts for 18 months! Cinderella Castle will shimmer with decorative ornaments and special 50th-anniversary gold bunting and crest. By nighttime, the Magic Kingdom icon will be “covered” in special pixie dust.

You know, Mickey and Minnie will not miss out on the celebration. Their costumes feature shades of EARidescent teal and purple fabric.

Since the 50th is considered a “golden anniversary,” Mickey and Minnie will sport gold shoes and bows for the celebration.

Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and EPCOT are also part of the fun. Each park’s icon will transform into a “Beacon of Magic.”

At Hollywood Studios, the Tower of Terror will receive some “special new touches” to illuminate the night sky.

Animal Kingdom’s Tree of Life will be covered in glimmering fireflies.

EPCOT gets the biggest upgrade. The lighting effects on Spaceship Earth will resemble a starry night, and they will be a permanent fixture for the icon.
